Sponsor an Animal launch

The Castle of Mey Sponsor an Animal Campaign.

The Castle of Mey annual Patrons' Party took place at The Goring Hotel in London on the evening of Tuesday 25th May for the fifth year and was used to launch The Castle of Mey 'Sponsor an Animal' campaign. The aim of the campaign is to raise funds to support the Animal Centre which helps fulfil one of The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust's key educational remits. In 2009 The Trust organised a number of special visits to the Centre for some 500 local school children to further their understanding of farming and where their food comes from. The Centre has proved very popular with the 28,000 visitors who come to The Castle of Mey each year.

On 23rd April 2010, as a result of last year's fundraising efforts at The Goring , the Mey Turret was unveiled by Miss Anne Dunnett, The Lord Lieutenant for Caithness. The Turret, constructed of stone from a nearby quarry and built by local craftsmen, is situated in the south east corner of the Walled Garden at The Castle of Mey. It provides visitors with wonderful views to the north over the Pentland Firth towards the Orkneys and to the west to Dunnet Head, the most northerly point on the British mainland.

On Tuesday evening the normally immaculate lawns of The Goring Hotel provided a temporary home for locally sourced goats, sheep, a donkey, chickens, ferrets and a pony much to the enjoyment of guests attending the Party.

'This year animals, from guinea pigs to Aberdeen Angus calves, are available to sponsor, and this opportunity will continue throughout this summer at Mey. All of us at Mey have been delighted by the excellent response so far and the funds raised will make a substantial difference to this worthwhile charitable enterprise', comments Ashe Windham, Chairman of the Trust.
